Slaves, including young children, are brutally killed and abused; many dead bodies are discovered and examined sometimes after being magically exhumedwith some details mentioned about their appearance and manner of death.
I wonder if Ms. Here, Pierce gives fans exactly what they want–a smart, savvy heroine making blooodhound name for herself on the mean streets of Tortall’s Lower City–while offering plenty to appeal to new readers as well!

Once Goodwin is gone, things come together rather quickly for young Beka, and it is up to her alone to keep it all from blowing up before help arrives.

That does not necessarily mean that I’m any less anxious to read the next in the series. Review quote “Tamora Pierce creates epic worlds populated by girls and women of bravery, heart, and strength. There is a beautiful little scene where Okha Soyan explains what this means to a confused but sympathetic Beka. Every time she loses another partner she ends up back with Goodwin and Tunstall.

This is the second book of a series set in Tortall’s distant past if you consider Alanna, Daine, and Kel to be the present. This is book 2 in the Beka Cooper books, but actually book 16, I believe, in the entire Tortal series.
I loved the first in this series and had devoured it and had been looking forward to more Beka Cooper ever since.

The novel has been listed on several bestseller lists, among them the New York Times Children’s Chapter Books bestseller list, where it featured seven weeks and was even number one in the week of March 5, Prostitutes and general tarts are called ‘doxies’.

The Circle of Magic. The following section contains spoilers about Bloodhound. The economic crisis in this book is caused by forgers — colemongers, in her inimitable idiom — rather than hotshot MBAs and back vloodhound financiers, but the general aura of panic and financial woe was dead on.
